Shorten Your Government Job Search by Targeting Direct Hire Authority Positions

Are you looking for a job with the Federal Government but frustrated with the lengthy application, rating and review process? Consider targeting positions that will be filled using the Government’s Direct Hire Authority provisions. Direct Hire Authority allows an agency to fill certain types of positions quickly by eliminating the requirements to rate and rank applicants, apply the “rule of three,” and apply veterans’ preferences.  In most cases, job openings must be advertised to the public. Generally, this is done through the Office of Personnel Management’s job website.

What kinds of jobs are being filled using Direct Hire Authority? Government-wide authorizations exist for some medical specialties such as medical officers, nurses, pharmacists, and radiological technologists. The Department of Defense also has requirements for acquisition professionals which include the following career specialties: Auditing, Business, Cost Estimating, Financial Management, Contracting, Facilities Engineering, Information Technology, Life Cycle Logistics, Production, Quality and Manufacturing, Program Management, Quality Control and Assurance, Science and Technology Management, Systems Planning, Research, Development, Engineering and Testing, and Test and Evaluation.

How can you tell if a position is being filled using Direct Hire Authority? The position announcement will state that the job is being filled using Direct Hire Authority. Be sure to pay attention to the closing date in the announcement and be sure to submit all required documents to ensure you are considered.

Tips to Finding a Government Job

  1. Determine the type of job that you want and identify potential openings by searching USAJobs.
  2. Carefully read the announcement, paying close attention to the closing date, job description, required qualifications, and application instructions.
  3. Submit a resume and other required documentation. Application instructions will be included in the job announcement.
  4. Be sure to tailor your resume to the job announcement. Be specific and show your expertise. Follow all instructions about length, format and content.
  5. Make sure to allocate sufficient time to accurately complete the application process.

Government Contracting Companies Continue to Hire

Many people don’t realize that government contracting companies are continuing to hire qualified personnel to fill a variety of open jobs ranging from entry level to senior technical and management positions.  Often times, government contractor personnel perform the same or very similar duties as government employees or military personnel.
